Responsible Pet Ownership
We know feral cats are an enormous problem for wildlife in Australia killng more than three billion animals per year however many people do not realise that our beloved pet cats are also having an enormous impact on wildlife as well.
Keeping Cats Contained
There are more pet cats in Australia than feral cats (27% of households have a cat = approximately 3.8 million domestic cats) 71% (2.7 million) cats are allowed to roam and hunt.
Research conducted by the Threatened Species Recovery Hub found each roaming cat kills on average 186 animals per year, including 40 native reptiles, 38 native birds, and 32 native mammals. In cities, for every square kilometre there are 40-70 roaming cats (killing 4440 to 8100 native animals every year this is 30 to 50 times more animals killed per square kilometer than by feral cats in the bush.
