Engaging landholders through citizen science

Run by our partner the National Parks Association of NSW, the “Who’s living on my Land?” citizen science survey engages landholders to use infrared motion detection cameras to monitor the wildlife living on their properties.

While data is being actively collected across public land tenures through the ‘WildCount’ project run by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), there is a lack of information from private land. Who’s Living on my Land seeks to fill this gap by providing valuable baseline information and in so doing assist to build a more complete picture of the species that live in our area.

Landholders are trained during a free local workshop on how to set up and use the cameras and how to make their own lures from a mixture of peanut butter, honey, oats and fish sauce. Participants then set up the camera on their properties which records for a period of two weeks. The photos are sent back to NPA for identification.
